Maria Cristina Falls

Easy
~13 km from the homestay 25–35 min by car

The 320-foot twin-falls on the Agus River that gave Iligan its nickname. The power plant releases the full curtain for a window around midday, so time your visit.

Getting there

Buru-un jeepney from the city proper (₱15–20) or Grab/JoyRide from the homestay (₱150–250). Enter through NPC Nature's Park.

8 AM – 5 PM; the full flow is usually released around 11 AM – 1 PM

Tinago Falls

Moderate
~16 km from the homestay 35–45 min, then ~500 steps down

A hidden 240-foot waterfall in a deep ravine with a cold turquoise pool. "Tinago" means hidden, and the ~500 steps down (and back up) are the price of admission.

Getting there

Buru-un jeepney (₱15–20) then habal-habal to the trailhead (₱50–80 each way), or Grab/JoyRide straight to the top (₱200–300).

Mimbalut Falls

~12 km from the homestay 25–30 min

A wide, gentle 90-foot cascade over tiered rocks. The easiest waterfall in Iligan, and the one to bring kids or grandparents to.

Getting there

Same Buru-un jeepney line; the falls are a short walk from the road.

Timoga Cold Springs

~12 km from the homestay 25–30 min

Spring-fed swimming pools with water so clear and cold it stays refreshing at noon. The lechon stalls across the road are a Timoga tradition.

Buru-un jeepney; tell the driver which pool you want (Timoga, Doña Pilar and others line the highway).

Dodiongan Falls

~15 km from the homestay 40–50 min, then a 20–30 min trek

A 20-meter curtain falling into a wide natural pool. Still mostly locals, still free, and glorious in the rainy season.

Getting there

Hire a habal-habal from the city (₱300–400 round trip including waiting). The trail starts at the Digkilaan jump-off.

Brgy. Dalipuga

Pampam Falls & Kalubihon Cave

A pair of hidden spots on the same trail: a small cave with its own waterfall tucked inside, and the photogenic Pampam Falls a short walk on.

Getting there

Dalipuga jeepney (₱14) to the Kalubihon junction, then habal-habal (₱15–30) toward Kalubihon Elementary School.

Buhanginan Hill, Macapagal Park & Anahaw Amphitheater

The city's hilltop park with a 360° view of Iligan Bay, the city grid and the mountains. Home to the open-air Anahaw Amphitheater.

Getting there

Jeepney to Pala-o (₱14) or Grab/JoyRide (₱80–120). The road winds up behind City Hall.

St. Michael's Cathedral, City Plaza & Public Market

The spiritual heart of the city and the stage for the Diyandi Festival every September, peaking on September 29, the feast of St. Michael the Archangel.

Sikyop Underground River & Pagangon Falls

A Higaonon-run eco-tourism site with an underground river you wade and swim through, canyoneering, the Pagangon (Sikyop) Falls and Inolusan Cave, all 15–20 minutes apart. The city's answer to large-scale underground-river tourism, still small and local.

Getting there

Hire a habal-habal near Mandulog Bridge on the highway (₱100–150 each way, ₱300 round trip), or rent a jeepney for a group (~₱1,500 round trip). Pin "Sikyop Agriculture Cooperative" in Google Maps; the road climbs after Rogongon, so bring a roadworthy vehicle.

Limunsudan Falls

A two-tiered giant at 870 feet, the second-highest waterfall in the Philippines, in Higaonon ancestral land. A rite of passage for Mindanao waterfall chasers.

Getting there

Hire a habal-habal with a guide (about ₱1,000 for two) from Rogongon; many visitors come via Talakag, Bukidnon.

The Tourism Triangle in a day

Leave the homestay at 7:30 and you will see three waterfalls, swim in a cold spring and watch the sunset over the bay.

  1. 7:30 AM

    Grab/JoyRide from the homestay to the Buru-un junction. Puto maya and sikwate on the way if you pass the market.

  2. 8:30 AM

    Tinago Falls while it is cool: 500 steps down, swim, raft, 500 steps up.

  3. 11:00 AM

    Maria Cristina Falls for the midday release at NPC Nature's Park.

  4. 1:00 PM

    Lechon lunch at the Timoga strip, then a cold-spring swim.

  5. 3:30 PM

    Mimbalut Falls for a quick stop on the way back.

  6. 5:30 PM
